ARKADELPHIA, Ark – SWOSU Volleyball had their five-match winning streak snapped on Saturday in a hard-fought, five-set defeat at Ouachita. The Tigers handed the Dawgs their second conference loss of the season, which drops SWOSU from a share of first place in the Great American Conference standings.
SWOSU won the opening set 25-23, but Ouachita answered with a 25-17 win in the second. The Dawgs had a chance to close out the third set late, leading 24-21 before Ouachita rallied to win the set 27-25 and regained the lead. SWOSU responded with a commanding win in the fourth, 25-12, to push the match to the fifth and deciding set.
The Bulldogs fell behind from the outset in the fifth, which left them battling uphill the entire time as Ouachita led by at least two points nearly the entire set. SWOSU got back within one twice – at 10-9 and 11-10 – thanks to kills by
Emily Holm, but Ouachita would finish the set and match off with a kill followed by a pair of attack errors committed by the Bulldogs.
Holm led the way for SWOSU with the best game of her career as a Bulldog, totaling a career-high 24 kills with a .344 attack percentage while adding three digs and three blocks. Her kills total more than doubles her previous career high of 11 and is the most by a SWOSU player in any match this season.
Danusia Sipa Borgeaud added 16 kills while
Addie Aman chipped in with 15 and
Elizabeth McVicker had nine.
Allie Hoang posted another double-double with a career-high 66 assists – one off the single-game school record – and 14 digs, becoming the ninth player in program history to record 1,000 career assists in the process.
Kaitlyn Dillon set a season high with 37 digs, while
Klemson Lancaster had 16, Borgeaud added 14 and
Kodee Avery chipped in 10.
"I am proud of our team for coming out of this extremely tough six-game stretch with a 5-1 record," SWOSU Head Coach
Josh Collins said following the match. "Obviously, I wish we could have played up to our potential today, but I am very proud of this group of girls and their effort. I am confident that we will return home focused and ready to perform our best in these final five matches of the regular season."
SWOSU falls to 16-5 on the year and 9-2 in GAC play with five matches remaining in the conference season. Next up for the Bulldogs is a trip to Durant on Thursday (Oct. 18) evening to face Southeastern Oklahoma State.
