OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – SWOSU Baseball fell to Oklahoma City, the number two-ranked team in NAIA, by a final score of 10-0 on Tuesday night at Jim Wade Stadium. The Dawgs again fell behind early and could not overcome the deficit as the bats were silent for most of the contest.
The Stars wasted no time in the early going, jumping out to a 1-0 lead after the leadoff batter of the game hit a homerun to right field to start things off. It was in the fifth inning however, that OCU would deal their best blow by putting up a five spot on the scoreboard to lead 6-0. All with two outs, the Stars singled to bring in a pair of runs and then hit a three-run homerun to right center to score the other runs of the inning. After getting two in the sixth, OCU ended the game via run rule in the eighth by getting two more including a walk-off bases loaded walk for the 10th and final run.
The Bulldog offense had opportunities to score multiple times throughout the course of the game, but just could not deliver the timely hit to push base runners across home plate and left 10 on base Tuesday night. SWOSU was shutout for just the second time this season.
Starting pitcher
Jeremy Smith (0-1) went 2.2 innings, allowing six (all earned) on five hits and two walks and was charged with his first loss of the season.
Blake Gooden came in next and pitched 1.1 innings of scoreless baseball, and was the only SWOSU arm to not allow a run.
Vincent Berrones (2.0) and
Skyler Martin (1.2) shared the final four innings of work.
Ruben Rodriguez and
Joshua Santos both came up with two hits on the night in the one and two holes of the lineup.
The loss moves the Bulldogs to 9-15 overall on the season, and pushes their losing streak to five games. SWOSU will host Arkansas-Monticello in a Great American Conference series beginning Friday at the Athletic Complex in a single nine-inning game and will conclude with a doubleheader on Saturday starting at noon.
