WEATHERFORD, Okla. – SWOSU Volleyball fell in four sets to Southeastern at home on Thursday. The Dawgs needed a fourth-set victory to push the match into a decisive fifth frame and came up just short, falling 26-24 in the final set to end their night.
The opening was a close matchup with 13 ties and four lead changes to begin the evening. Tied at 20-20, it was the Savage Storm who scored five of the final six points to claim the early match advantage.
The next two sets saw both teams controlling the set that they would go on to win. In the second, SWOSU pulled away when the frame hit double digits and extended the margin even more with six-consecutive points to take control at 20-13. From there, kills from
Danusia Sipa Borgeaud,
Jenny Tackett, and
Allison Russell iced the set and allowed the Dawgs to tie up the match back up at 1-1.
The third set was all Southeastern, who never trailed at any point and went on to win 25-16. The Bulldogs posted a negative hitting percentage – their only set hitting .150 or less.
Knowing they needed a fourth-set win, SWOSU came out fighting in a back-and-forth final frame that featured eight ties and three lead changes. When teams weren't trading ties it was SWOSU who was the team that was pacing the set and leading, but Southeastern would scratch their way back to keep things close. With the Dawgs leading 19-15, SE stormed back to tie up the set at 21-21 and then eventually got to match point at 25-24. A long rally on match point ended on a Borgeaud blocked attack that gave Southeastern the victory.
Borgeaud and Tackett led the offense all night as the only two players who posted double-digit kills with 12 and 11. Tackett's 11 kills marks her career high, topping her previous number by three points.
Lindsey McCauley dug 20 balls on the defense's back line and
Sofia Gruden was SWOSU's presence at the net with four blocks (two solo, two assisted).
SWOSU (11-17, 6-6 GAC) will play again next Tuesday (Oct. 31) in Shawnee when they take on Oklahoma Baptist at 7 pm. They will wrap up their week back at home against East Central on Thursday (Nov. 2).
