Second-Half Surge Earns Lady Dawgs Elusive Victory at Henderson State

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – For the third time this season, the SWOSU Women's Basketball team overcame a double-digit deficit and earned a victory as they defeated Henderson State 85-80 on Thursday night. SWOSU handed the Reddies their first conference setback of the season, claiming their first win at the Duke Wells Center since 2013 in the process.

Henderson State knocked down six three-pointers in the first quarter, building a 31-17 lead after the period that extended to a 16-point advantage at 33-17 early in the second quarter. From that point, the Lady Bulldogs began battling back by outscoring the Reddies 23-17 in the second to go to the break down by just eight, 48-40.

SWOSU surged out of the locker room, hitting the Reddies with an 18-2 run to take the lead, which they would never give back. The Lady Bulldogs pushed ahead and took a 66-61 lead after the third quarter and they never held a lead of less than five points in the fourth quarter as they picked up the conference victory.

Tyra Aska led the Lady Bulldogs comeback, hitting a career-high five three-pointers – the same number she made in the first 10 games of the season – to finish with 23 points along with seven rebounds and two assists. Hailey Tucker chipped in 18 points, six assists and five rebounds while Hayden Priddy and Whitney Dunn each had 11 points. Dunn also finished with her second straight double-double by adding 11 rebounds and Savannah Gray was two points shy of a double-double with eight points and two rebounds.

"At halftime we made some adjustments and fixed things both offensively and defensively and it paid off," SWOSU Head Coach Kelsi Musick said after the game. "I think Tyra Aska really rose to the occasion tonight and hit some big shots that helped her team get a tough conference victory on the road."

The victory is the fourth straight for the Lady Bulldogs, who improve to 8-3 on the year and remain in second place in the GAC standings at 4-1. Next up for SWOSU is a trip across the street to face Ouachita on Saturday afternoon at Bill Vining Arena in Arkadelphia.
