CANYON, Texas – In their second match at the West Texas A&M Buff Invitational, the SWOSU Volleyball team took a set off Adams State but remained winless after falling to the Grizzlies in four sets. Scores of the sets were 19-25, 25-22, 14-25, 21-25.
SWOSU was slow out of the gates in the first set, trailing nearly wire-to-wire before ASU got the opening set 25-19. In the second, the Bulldogs had to play from behind as well but they overcame a 15-10 deficit and tied the set at 20-20 on a kill by
Carly Zak. A four-point run, which included kills from Zak and
Paige Holt put SWOSU up 23-20 and Holt ended the set with a pair of kills, the final one for set point at 25-22.
Adams State's response was early in the third set, with the Grizzlies getting back-to-back kills from Hannah Atkinson to go up 7-2 early in the set. SWOSU was unable to get any closer than five points the rest of the set and ASU regained control with a 25-14 set win. ASU was again out early in the fourth, leaving SWOSU to play from behind. The Dawgs got within two points on three occasions, the last at 23-21, but the Grizzlies regrouped following a timeout and scored the final two points for the 25-21 victory to end the match.
Friday's night cap was SWOSU's most offensive performance of the young season, with the Bulldogs collecting a team hitting percentage of .153 with 41 kills.
Carly Zak led the way with 12 kills and hit .140, while
Kelsi Schmidtberger emerged in the middle with 10 kills and just four hitting errors. SWOSU's strength in the middle was on display with 13 blocks, seven apiece for the starting middle duo of Schmidberger and Holt, who also had eight kills in the match.
Kayla Hebert had a balanced stat line with 34 assists, eight digs, four blocks and three kills, while Zak and
Lindsey McCauley tied for team-high honors with nine digs apiece.
SWOSU concludes their weekend in Canyon on Saturday, facing the host West Texas A&M at 1:00 pm before closing out the tourney against Eastern New Mexico at 5:30 pm.
