CANYON, Texas – SWOSU Volleyball's opening weekend came to a conclusion on Saturday evening at the West Texas A&M Buff Classic in a 3-0 defeat against Eastern New Mexico. The Greyhounds won by scores of 25-21, 25-22, 25-23, dropping the Bulldogs to 1-4 on the season after a 1-3 showing at the tournament.
SWOSU had chances late in each set, but they were unable to get the crucial points to pull away and win one. In the first, a kill by
Carly Zak tied things at 19-19 and forced an ENMU timeout but the Greyhounds got the next two points to regain control. Zak got another kill at 21-20, but the next three points went to Eastern and the finished it off at 25-21. The Dawgs let for most of the second set, including late at 21-19 before ENMU got three straight points and six of the final seven to take it 25-22.
SWOSU played from behind in the third set, but overcame a 16-12 deficit and took a lead of 22-21 on a kill from Zak, but again a three-point spurt from the Greyhounds switched the momentum and allowed ENMU to close it out at 25-23.
Zak closed out the opening weekend with an efficient 13-kill effort while hitting .300 for the match and adding six digs.
Jill Green added five kills and
Kelsi Schmidtberger had four in the middle while hitting .214.
Kayla Hebert recorded a double-double with 23 assists and 12 digs and
Kaitlyn Dillon again reached double digits with 10 digs to go along with four assists.
The difficult opening-weekend schedule leaves the Bulldogs with a 1-4 record heading into a road contest Tuesday against Lubbock Christian. First serve in that match will be at 6:00 pm.
