EDMOND, Okla. – SWOSU Volleyball suffered a 3-2 defeat against Southwest Baptist in their first five-set match of the 2016 season and the opener of the GAC-MIAA Crossover at Hamilton Field House in Edmond. Set scores for the match were 19-25, 25-19, 25-22, 23-25, 12-15.
After an error-filled opening set, SWOSU got things working in the second and third set, hitting above .200 in each set and taking command of the match with a 2-1 lead. The Dawgs fell behind 20-16 in the fourth, but three kills by
Carly Zak spearheaded a five-point run that put SWOSU back on top at 21-20. SWOSU was shut down offensively for the rest of the match, scoring just two more points on attack errors from SBU as the Bearcats pulled ahead 25-23 and sent the match to the deciding fifth set.
SWOSU again overcame an early deficit in the fifth set, turning a 9-5 hole into a 10-9 lead on consecutive ball-handling errors by the Bearcats. From that point on, however, it was SBU who closed the strongest, scoring the final three points to break a 12-12 tie and end the match at 15-12.
Zak led the Bulldogs with 20 kills while
Kelsi Schmidtberger and
Jill Green had nine apiece.
Kayla Hebert secured yet another double-double with 40 assists and 11 digs while
Lindsey McCauley led the Dawgs with 13 digs and
Kaitlyn Dillon added 12 while playing in her hometown. SBU had the advantage at the net with 11 blocks, compared to six for SWOSU, with Schmidtberger leading the way with four block assists.
SWOSU continues the tournament on Friday evening, facing No. 7-ranked Central Oklahoma at 6:00 pm.
