Second Half Outburst Propels Lady Bulldogs to Rivalry Victory

Box Score (html)

ALVA, Okla. – After trailing by seven points at intermission, the Lady Bulldog basketball team outscored Northwestern Oklahoma State 51-30 the rest of the way to break away for a 79-65 rivalry victory on Monday evening at Percefull Fieldhouse in Alva.

SWOSU scored just 14 points in each of the first two quarters, falling into a 35-28 hole at the break. The Lady Dawgs hit just 3-of-11 three-pointers in the opening half and turned the ball over 10 times to offset their 40% (12-of-30) shooting from the field.

The second half was a completely different story, thanks in large part to the efforts of Jennifer Williams in the third quarter. Williams scored 11 points in the quarter, hitting all six of her free throw attempts before rattling home a three-pointer late in the quarter to give SWOSU their first lead of the half at 52-50 to end the third quarter.

SWOSU rode that momentum into the fourth quarter and took care of business primarily in the paint, where they outscored Northwestern 18-4 in the final ten minutes. The Lady Bulldogs had a 27-15 advantage in the period, building a lead as high as 17 in the waning moments before finishing with the 79-65 victory.

Williams and Hayden Priddy, who played all 40 minutes for the fourth straight game, scored 17 points apiece to lead the Lady Bulldogs to victory. GAC Player of the Week Janae Coffee scored 14 points and grabbed eight rebounds in 21 minutes of action while Hailey Tucker chipped in 12 points, four assists and two blocks.

"I think we settled down and were more patient in the second half which allowed us to run our offense and take better shots," SWOSU Head Coach Kelsi Musick said. "Throw out the records when it comes to rivalry games, Northwestern came to play and we had to really pick our game up in the second half to get the win."

SWOSU (16-8, 12-6 GAC) earns their fourth consecutive win and remains all alone in third place of the GAC standings with the victory. The Lady Bulldogs are back in action on Thursday night, hosting Southeastern Oklahoma State at 5:30 pm for Senior Night at the Pioneer Cellular Event Center.
