WEATHERFORD, Okla. – SWOSU Volleyball defeated St. Gregory's in three-straight sets (25-17, 25-17, 25-21) on Tuesday night to wrap up the Bulldog's non-conference matches for the season.
Kelsi Schmidtberger and
Carly Zak led the Dawgs in the scoring category, each adding 11 kills on the night.
The first set was dominated by Schmidtberger, who collected a team-leading six kills without committing an error. SWOSU was in control from the start, forcing Cavalier timeouts after leading 12-6 and then again later on in the set after extending the lead to 18-10. Zak put an end to the first set after slamming home a kill, making it her fifth of the first set.
After a switch of the teams' sides, St. Gregory's came out battling in the second set keeping the score even in the early going. Tied 12-12, the Dawgs scored seven-consecutive points to pull away from the Cavs thanks to three Zak kills and three hitting errors against SGU. From there it was four different Bulldogs adding a kill each mixed with more errors from the opposition, giving SWOSU the 25-17 set-two victory.
In the third and final set, the Dawgs wasted no time jumping out to a 7-0 lead. After a
Valerie Vermillion kill made it 14-5, the Cavs called a timeout looking for a momentum shift. That shift would never come, as the Bulldogs continued to creep towards match point.
Blair Dressendorfer added a kill to make the lead 20-10, and after some sloppy sequences to give SGU points,
DeLayni Fine ended the match with her only point of the night to give SWOSU the 25-21 win.
Schmidtberger led the Dawgs on the night with her .688 hitting percentage, doing most of her damage in the match's first two sets where she had nine of her 11 kills. Zak also collected 11 kills, but a few hitting setbacks that limited her to a .135 attack percentage for the game. Defensively, SWOSU held SGU to a mere .017 hitting percentage in the match.
Lindsey McCauley and
Kaitlyn Dillon led the team in digs, each totaling 19.
The victory marked the 66th career win for SWOSU Head Coach
Josh Collins, but his first while facing a past assistant coach in Allison Roberts, an assistant for the Bulldogs from 2013-14 who is now in her second season leading the St. Gregory's volleyball program.
"I'm pleased with the way our team came out and handled business tonight," Collins said after the match. "It was exciting to welcome Coach Roberts back to the Pioneer Cellular Event Center and I'm proud of the great job that she's done with the St. Gregory's program. I thought her team played hard the entire match and they served tough tonight."
The Bulldogs (10-14) will turn their attention to the remaining Great American Conference schedule, where they will play the next four matches on their home court of the Pioneer Cellular Event Center. Up next, SWOSU will host Oklahoma Baptist next Tuesday, November 1 at 7 pm.
