Bulldogs Bring Momentum into GAC Road Trip

Setting the Scene
- SWOSU Volleyball takes a three-game winning streak with them on the road this weekend for a pair of Great American Conference matches in Arkansas
- The Bulldogs face Henderson State on Friday at 6:00 pm before a 1:00 pm match against Ouachita on Saturday, with both matches being played in Arkadelphia
- SWOSU went 3-1 last week with a pair of GAC wins that helped the Bulldogs move over .500 in league play for the first time this season
- Both of the Bulldogs opponents this weekend sit above SWOSU in the conference standings by one game, with a 6-3 record in nine GAC matches this season
 
The Opponent
Henderson State (11-10, 6-3 GAC)
- Winners of five of their last six conference matches, including a three-game winning streak that includes victories over Southern Nazarene, East Central and Southeastern Oklahoma State
- Ranked ninth in the GAC in hitting with a .175 percentage for the year but the Reddies are fifth in the league with 12.44 kills per set
- Led by Sharon Tukuaoga, who shared GAC Hitter of the Week honors with SWOSU's Carly Zak this week and ranks second in the league in kills with 3.88 per set
 
Ouachita (14-5, 6-3 GAC)
- The Tigers also bring a three-game winning streak into the weekend with three consecutive conference wins over schools from Oklahoma
- Ouachita leads the GAC in hitting percentage (.228) and they are holding their opponents to a .176 hitting percentage, the fourth-best mark in the league
- Tiger setter Stormi Leonard is the reigning GAC Setter of the Week and she leads the GAC with an average of 10.79 assists per set
 
The Coaches
SWOSU: Josh Collins (64-85, 5th season)
- Led the Bulldogs to the best season in program history in 2015, winning 22 games and the GAC Tournament Championship
- Has coached nine All-GAC selections, one GAC Freshman of the Year and one AVCA All-Central Region selection in four seasons
- His teams have earned two AVCA Team Academic Awards and one GAC Sportsmanship Award
- Added the duties of Director of Gameday Operations at SWOSU in the fall of 2014.
 
Checking the Standings
- With their victories last weekend, SWOSU has moved into sole possession of seventh place in the league standings, but they are just one game out of a four-way tie for third place
- The Bulldogs defeated Arkansas Tech last weekend, dropping the Golden Suns into a tie with Oklahoma Baptist atop the standings at 7-2
- Both of the Bulldogs opponents this weekend are part of the four-way tie for third place in the GAC at 6-3
 
SWOSU Notes
- Carly Zak became the GAC's all-time leader in kills last Saturday, earning her the GAC Hitter of the Week honor for the second time this season and moving her into eighth place on the active kills list for players in NCAA Division II with 1,502 career kills
- Kayla Hebert moved into second place on SWOSU's career assists list last weekend and she enters this week's matches with 1,828 assists in her two-year career with the Bulldogs
- SWOSU's Kaitlyn Dillon is currently ranked seventh in the GAC for digs, averaging 5.03 per set during conference play, and her season total of 312 leaves her 21 digs shy of setting a new single-season school record for digs by a freshman, a record currently held by Kaila Lancaster (332 in 2012)
- The Bulldogs rank third in service aces during league play with 56 (1.56 per set) and they are second in digs with 627 (17.42 per set) in conference matches
- Paige Holt set a new career high with eight blocks (one solo, seven assist) against Lubbock Christian, moving her into SWOSU's top ten list for career blocks with 151
 
Looking Ahead
- Beginning next Tuesday with a non-conference matchup against St. Gregory's, the Bulldogs will play five consecutive matches at home over the next two weeks
- The Bulldogs conclude the regular season on November 10th with a trip to Alva to face Northwestern Oklahoma State
