Setting the Scene
- Two Great American Conference matches and a triangular on Saturday will keep the SWOSU Volleyball team busy this week as they look to improve upon their two-game winning streak
- The Bulldogs head to Durant on Tuesday to face Southeastern Oklahoma State before welcoming GAC newcomer Oklahoma Baptist to the Pioneer Cellular Event Center on Thursday night
- SWOSU then travels west to Canyon, Texas for a Saturday tri-match that will see the Bulldogs face Oklahoma City and West Texas A&M
- SWOSU enters the week with a two-game winning streak and having won four of their last five matches, including three straight-set decisions in league play over the past two weeks
 
The Opponents
Southeastern Oklahoma State (3-11, 1-2 GAC)
- Have lost five of their last six matches, but earned a 3-0 victory over East Central in their last Great American Conference outing
- Ranked fourth in the league with a .194 hitting percentage, but opponents are hitting .235 against the Storm
- Abby Jameson leads SE with 165 kills (3.75/set) while Julia Benford is hitting a team-best .285
 
Oklahoma Baptist (8-7, 3-0 GAC)
- Enter the week unbeaten in GAC play at 3-0 and 8-7 overall in their first season as a member of the conference
- Very tough defensively, averaging 18.14 digs/set, the second-best number in the conference while holding opponents to a .191 hitting percentage
- Balanced offensive attack has three players (Priscila Mendes, Denise Coroiescu, Cat Roth) with more than 120 kills on the year
 
Oklahoma City (9-3)
- Riding a five-match win streak heading into this week, including a three-set win over Southeastern, their only previous Division II opponent this season
 
West Texas A&M (4-8)
- Have lost seven straight matches after opening the season 4-1 and they are 0-4 in league play
 
The Coaches
SWOSU: Josh Collins (40-64, 4th season)
- Named second head volleyball coach in SWOSU history on January 1, 2012
- Has coached six All-GAC selections and one GAC Freshman of the Year in three seasons
- His teams have earned two AVCA Team Academic Awards and one GAC Sportsmanship Award
- Added the duties of Director of Gameday Operations at SWOSU in the fall of 2014.
 
Southeastern: Brianna Barry (21-25, 2nd season)
- Led SE to an 18-14 overall mark and third-place finish in the GAC in her first season
- Was a four-year starter at Florida State before a three-year professional playing career overseas
 
Oklahoma Baptist: Anna Howle (212-79, 8th season)
- Three-time Sooner Athletic Conference Coach of the Year and AVCA 'Thirty Under 30' honoree
- Has won at least 24 matches in all seven of her previous seasons at OBU
 
Oklahoma City: Kyle Steele (29-15, 2nd season)
- Led the Stars to a 20-win season in his first year at the school after three years as an assistant at Southern Nazarene
 
West Texas A&M: Jason Skoch (204-38, 7th season)
- Has won better than 87% of the games he's coached as a head coach in the past 10 seasons
- Four-time LSC Coach of the Year
 
Checking the Standings
- SWOSU is currently tied atop the Great American Conference standings with a 3-0 mark
- The Bulldogs are tied with Arkansas Tech and Thursday's opponent, Oklahoma Baptist
- Ouachita and Harding are both tied for fourth in the standings at 2-1, one game behind the leaders
 
Last Time Out
- With home victories over Southern Nazarene and Northwestern Oklahoma State, SWOSU improved to 3-0 in league play and opened the year 2-0 on their home court
- SWOSU picked up their first-ever three-set victory over SNU and they've now started league play 3-0 for the first time in program history
 
SWOSU Notes
- At 6-4, SWOSU has their best 10-game record in program history and their first 3-0 start in league play
- With 32 kills and six blocks last week, Carly Zak now leads the GAC in points scored (156) and she ranks second in kills with 138 (4.06/set)
- Zak also set a new career-high with 17 digs in a double-double against Northwestern
- The Bulldogs rank sixth in the GAC with a hitting percentage of .183, and they're holding opponents to a matching mark of .183, the fifth-best defensive mark in the league
- Kelsi Schmidtberger is ranked third in the GAC with a .309 hitting percentage while Kayla Hebert is ranked third with 329 assists (9.68/set)
- Jill Green set a new career-high with 10 kills against Northwestern on Thursday
- With five blocks in both matches last week, Paige Holt now ranks fourth in the GAC for the year, totaling 30 blocks (0.88/set)
- Kaila Lancaster is ranked fourth in the league in digs with 177 (5.21/set), upping her SWOSU school record career total to 1,465
 
Looking Ahead
- SWOSU will play three times next week, including a Monday non-conference match at Langston
- The Bulldogs return home for the weekend to face Southern Arkansas and Arkansas-Monticello
