Setting the Scene
- A pair of midweek games and a crucial league series highlights this week for SWOSU Baseball, which begins on Tuesday afternoon in Lawton against Cameron
- The Bulldogs then return home for four contests, including a Wednesday game against USAO and a three-game set with Arkansas Tech starting on Friday
- SWOSU defeated USAO 8-5 earlier this season in Chickasha and they will get a return trip from Cameron in two weeks
- The Bulldogs are coming off a series win over GAC-leader Ouachita Baptist, taking two-of-three games from the Tigers with a pair of shutout victories on Friday
- This weekend's series with Arkansas Tech is the final weekend home series for the Bulldogs and they will honor their five seniors prior to Saturday's doubleheader
 
The Opponents
Cameron (14-19)
- Enter the week on a five-game slide after a suffering a three-game sweep against Angelo State last weekend after a split with West Texas A&M the prior week
- Hitting .256 as a team with two players, Brandon Wright (.345) and Jonathan Reyes (.316), batting above .300
- Strength of the team has been pitching, where they have a team ERA of 3.98 with eight of their 14 pitchers who have seen action sporting an ERA of less than four
 
USAO (24-13)
- Have won 10 straight games to improve to 24-13 on the year and they are 11-8 since their first meeting with the Bulldogs
- Hitting .315 as a team with Rafael Pena leading the way with .438 average, 15 doubles, three home runs and 40 RBI
- Team ERA is 3.52 with opponents hitting .256 against the Drovers staff
 
Arkansas Tech (20-16, 7-10 GAC)
- Reached the 20-win plateau last weekend, but dropped two-of-three games against Southern Arkansas to fall to 7-10 in GAC play
- Ranked third in the GAC in batting with a .298 team average that includes 66 doubles and league-leading totals of 34 home runs and 236 RBI
- With a team ERA of 6.12, they rank ninth in the league as opponents are hitting .280 of the ATU pitching staff
 
The Coaches
SWOSU: Zack Saunders (99-77, 4th season)
- In his fourth season leading the Bulldogs and his teams have earned a berth in the Great American Conference Tournament in each of the previous three seasons
- Has tutored 14 players who have earned All-GAC status, including four first-team selections, one All-Central Region honoree, one regional gold glove award winner and one MLB draftee
- Named GAC Coach of the Year in 2013 after leading the Bulldogs to a 31-16 record and a second place finish in the conference at 21-9
- Previously served as an assistant at SWOSU for six seasons under former Bulldog coaches Charles Teasley and Scott Selby
- Played collegiately at Kansas State following two seasons at Connors State playing on nationally-ranked junior college teams
- Has a record of 99-77 while leading the Bulldogs, with a records of 2-4 against Cameron, 6-1 against USAO and 4-7 against Arkansas Tech
 
Cameron: Brady Huston (14-19, 1st season)
- In his first season as the head coach for Cameron Baseball after spending the 2014 season as the top assistant coach
 
Science & Arts: Mike Ross
- Has been a member of the USAO staff since 2005 after working as a student assistant for the USAO Baseball team from 2000-02
 
Arkansas Tech: Dave Dawson (189-114, 6th season)
- Sixth-year head coach of the Wonder Boys has led ATU to four 30-win seasons, including a program-record 44 wins and GAC Championship in 2014
 
SWOSU Notes
- Five seniors will be honored this weekend as they play their final home series, including: Dalton Daniels, Ethan Davis, Chris Joiner, Travis Leverett & Jiro Morales
- Daniels has started every game this season and is batting .242 with three doubles, one triple and five RBI
- Davis, Joiner and Leverett have all seen action on the mound for the Bulldogs while Morales has appeared in four games with five at-bats this season
- Jon Chidester became the first pitcher in conference history to be named the GAC Pitcher of the Week three times in one season after his performance against Ouachita Baptist on Friday
- Chidester tossed a three-hit, complete-game shutout against the Tigers' league-leading offense as he notched his first shutout as a Bulldog
 
Checking the Standings
- SWOSU heads to the weekend sitting eighth in the GAC standings, just percentage points ahead of this weekend's opponent Arkansas Tech
- The Bulldogs have nine conference games remaining to secure a spot in the GAC Tournament for the fourth consecutive season
- The top six teams in the final standings advance to the conference tournament, held early next month in Enid
 
Looking Ahead
- SWOSU will play at Harding next weekend for a three-game set before concluding the season with a return game against Cameron, a road series at Northwestern Oklahoma State and a single game at Oklahoma Christian
