2015 Division II Conference Commissioner's Association All-Super Region 3 Football Team RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. – Led by first team selection
D.J. Jones, the Bulldogs placed three on the 2015 Division II Conference Commissioner's Association (D2CCA) All-Super Region 3 Football Team released Wednesday afternoon.
Trevon Hartfield and
Conner Bays also made the team as second team honorees.
The three All-Super Region 3 selections are the most the Bulldogs have ever placed on the regional team voted on by the region's sports information directors, and it is the third straight season the Bulldogs have had a First Team All-Super Region 3 honoree. Over the two seasons prior, SWOSU had only two players selected for the team overall. SWOSU led all Oklahoma schools in number of total selected, and tied with Henderson State among Great American Conference schools.
Jones, a junior, earned First Team All-Super Region 3 honors as a return specialist for the first time in his career. The Oakland, California, native currently ranks second in all of Division II in punt return yards after averaging 19.6 yards per return, and is just 11 yards short of setting a new program single-season record for punt return yards heading into Saturday's Live United Texarkana Bowl. His two punt return touchdowns set a new school single-season record. Jones also ranked in the top 20 nationally in average kickoff return yards at 27.1 yards on 15 returns. By making the first team, Jones is now eligible for the D2CCA All-America team.
Hartfield, a senior, earned Second Team All-Super Region 3 honors as a corner back for the first time in his career. The native of Watonga, Oklahoma, anchored a defensive backfield that ranked 13th nationally in team passing efficiency defense. Hartfield led the conference and set a new program season record with 22 passes defended, including four interceptions that he returned for 75 yards. Hartfield recorded 64 tackles, including 50 solo, and had a season-high 14 tackles, including 13 solo, against Northwestern Oklahoma State. The senior also recorded two tackles for loss and forced two fumbles over the course of the season.
Bays, a junior, also earned Second Team All-Super Region 3 honors for the first time from his safety position. A native of Edmond, Oklahoma, Bays leads the team and is fifth in the GAC with 105 tackles, including 55 solo, and 5.5 tackles for loss. His 105 tackles ranks third in a single season since SWOSU joined the NCAA, and it is the first 100-plus tackle season since 2013. He has currently tallied double-digit tackles six times heading into the Live United Bowl, including a career-high 14 tackles against both Ouachita Baptist and Arkansas Tech. Bays has also broken up seven passes, and intercepted three more, taking one 41 yards into the end zone against Oklahoma Baptist. The junior is also a nominee for the Cliff Harris Award, given to the nation's top small college defensive player.
SWOSU Head Coach
Dan Cocannouer has now doubled the total of All-Super Region honorees under his tutelage. He has mentored four first team selections and two second team picks.
The Bulldogs will conclude their season against Central Oklahoma on Friday (December 5th) in the Live United Texarkana Bowl at noon in Texarkana, Arkansas. Tickets are still available for purchase at the SWOSU Athletics and Bursar offices, and are $10 for adults and $4 for students.
