WEATHERFORD, Okla. – For the second time this season, the SWOSU Volleyball team was handed a four-set defeat at the hands of in-state conference foe Southeastern Oklahoma State on Thursday night. The defeat snaps a school-record five-game winning streak by the Bulldogs, who are now 16-9 on the year and 8-4 in Great American Conference play.
After falling behind by dropping the first two sets, SWOSU rallied to win the third 25-16 and continue the match on but they squandered a 23-21 lead late in the fourth set as they had a chance to take the match the distance. A service error by the Bulldogs, their sixth of the night, started a four-point run as the Savage Storm finished off the set 25-23 and the match 3-1.
The highlight for the Bulldogs came earlier in that fourth set as SWOSU junior outside hitter
Carly Zak recorded the 1,037th kill of her career, setting a new all-time school record for kills. Zak finished with 17 kills and hit .261 for the match as the broke the record of 1,036 kills held by Kasandra Gurtner, who played for the Bulldogs from 2005-07.
Kelsi Schmidtberger added 14 kills and hit .273 while
DeLayni Fine had eight kills and
Kayla Hebert added seven. Hebert was all over the court, finishing with a monster double-double of 40 assists and 17 digs while Zak also had a double-double as she added 16 digs.
Kaila Lancaster recorded 16 digs while
Lindsey McCauley and
Ariana Olson each had 11, but Southeastern still beat SWOSU in that category with 88 digs compared to 80 for the Bulldogs.
The strength of the Bulldogs on Thursday night was at the net where they had nine blocks, led by
Paige Holt with a team-high five. SWOSU was blocked just four times, but they hit .175 while Southeastern put it down at a .203 clip.
SWOSU has little time to dwell on their defeat as they return to action on Friday night at the Pioneer Cellular Event Center, hosting Southwestern Christian in the return match of a home-and-home season series. First serve will be at 7:00 pm tomorrow evening.
