WEATHERFORD, Okla. – Entering Tuesday's season finale against Newman, SWOSU's
Bryan Holt had appeared in just two games this season, recording one hit in seven at-bats. That didn't deter the Bulldogs third baseman, however, as he came up with four hits – including a walkoff single in the 11th – to help SWOSU defeat the Jets by a score of 5-4.
The Bulldogs built a 3-0 lead after three innings, scoring on a sacrifice fly from
Brandon Ruiz in the second, a Holt RBI single in the third and a bases-loaded hit by pitch of
JR Head. Newman came back with three runs on three hits in the fourth inning, tying the game at 3-3.
The teams traded runs in the sixth inning but then the pitching and defense took over for the next few innings, forcing the game to extras. SWOSU loaded the bases in the bottom of the 10th with two outs before
Dalton Daniels grounded out to end the inning but the Bulldogs would mount another two-out rally in the 11th inning.
After two quick groundouts to start the bottom of the 11th,
Mitchell Brittain and
Tyler Rapp had back-to-back singles, bringing up Holt with runners on first and second. Holt came through with a single through the right side of the Jets infield and Brittain was able to score from second well ahead of the throw to end the game.
SWOSU used just two pitchers in the game, getting 6.0 innings of work from
Chris Joiner before
Travis Leverett came in to shut down the Jets for the final five frames. Leverett allowed just two hits and no runs while facing 17 batters in 5.0 innings of work. He earned the victory, improving to 4-1 on the year.
The win ensures that the Bulldogs will have a winning season for the third consecutive season under head coach
Zack Saunders. SWOSU enters the Great American Conference Tournament with an overall record of 25-21. The Bulldogs are the No. 5 seed in the tournament and they will face Arkansas-Monticello on Saturday at 3:30 pm in Enid, Okla.
