BARTLESVILLE, Okla. – The SWOSU men's basketball team saw their 2013-14 season ended on Thursday by Southern Arkansas in the first round of the Great American Conference tournament. The Muleriders defeated SWOSU 63-59 at Bruin Fieldhouse in Bartlesville to eliminate the Bulldogs from the postseason tournament.
GAC Player of the Year
Rod Camphor scored 17 points to lead the Bulldogs, but he was limited to just three in the second half as SWOSU tried to overcome a seven-point halftime deficit. The Bulldogs took their final lead at 59-57 on a lay-in by
Gary Inglett with just over three minutes to play, but it would be the last basket of the game for SWOSU.
Southern Arkansas ended the game on a 6-0 run, including the go-ahead basket from Jeffrey Walker with 34 seconds to play. SWOSU came up empty on their next possession and fouled, allowing Duke Reed to put the game away at the free throw line after he hit both attempts with 12 seconds remaining.
Camphor had a game-high 17 points and six rebounds in his final game as a Bulldog while
Michael Bradley had nine points in seven rebounds in his last outing. Bradley also had five blocked shots the day after being named the GAC Defender of the Year. Inglett recorded his 11th double-double of the season, scoring 14 points and pulling down 10 rebounds before fouling out in the final minute.
SWOSU hit just 16-of-53 (30.2%) of their field goal attempts and 7-of-28 (25.0%) 3-pointers, their worst shooting night since a loss to Arkansas-Monticello on February 1.
Kenyan Borders hit two clutch 3-pointers in the second half and dished out a game-high six assists, but his backcourt mate
Trent Washington had his poorest shooting effort of the season, missing all 10 of his 3-point attempts and finishing with a season-low two points.
"We didn't make enough shots to win the game today," SWOSU Coach
Bob Battisti said after the game. "Our defense played well enough to win and I thought we rebounded alright, but the final key to winning is making shots and we just didn't do that well enough tonight."
The Bulldogs conclude the season – their first under the direction of Battisti – with a 17-10 record, a five-win improvement from last season. SWOSU finished the year 14-6 in the GAC, taking second place in the conference after being picked eighth in the preseason poll.
