Walkoff Win Highlights GAC Opener for SWOSU Baseball

WEATHERFORD, Okla. – No. 26 SWOSU baseball rebounded from a tough loss in Saturday's first game with a walkoff win against No. 4-ranked Southern Arkansas in the final game of their opening Great American Conference series.

Southern Arkansas scored in five consecutive innings, including a six-run third, to take control of Saturday's first game. The Muleriders pounded out 17 hits in the effort, negating a strong offensive effort from the Bulldogs.
 
Dalton Daniels, Chris Faulkner and JR Head all had multiple hits for SWOSU and Head had a team-high two RBI, but it was not enough for the Dawgs. Jacob Swigart started and lasted just 2.2 innings before being run after allowing seven hits and eight earned runs. Chris Swigart pitched the final 6.1 innings, striking out two and allowing 10 hits.

SWOSU built their lead in game two with a six-run second inning and held on with runs in the seventh and eighth innings to pick up the Saturday split. The game, slated for seven innings, was forced into extra innings on Jiro Morales came through with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh, tying the game at 8-8 after SAU had taken the lead.
 
After SWOSU sat down the Muleriders in order in the eighth, Head doubled with one out in the bottom of the inning and came around to score on the next play as Brandon Ruiz singled to center field and the Bulldogs scored the win in walkoff fashion.
 
Head and Ruiz each had three hits in the game while Chris Faulkner and Kale Thaxton also had multi-hit games. Dietrick Turney had one hit and two RBI while seven different runners scored for the Bulldogs.
 
Ethan Davis started on the hill for SWOSU but was run from the game in the sixth inning after allowing 12 hits and seven runs. Travis Leverett pitched the final 2.2 innings, allowing just two hits and one run while striking out one, and he picked up the victory to improve to 1-0 on the year.
 
 
The Bulldogs end their first conference series 3-4 (1-2 GAC) on the year. They return to conference action next at Arkansas-Monticello, but first the Bulldogs will host Oklahoma Christian for one, nine-inning game on Tuesday starting at 4 pm.
