WEATHERFORD, Okla. – A pitcher's duel between
Jonathan Johnson of SWOSU and Dylan Lynn of Southern Arkansas highlighted the conference opener between the teams for the first nine innings.
Eventually, however, it was Southern Arkansas who broke through and scored three runs in the 10th inning to earn a 4-1 extra-inning victory over the Bulldogs on Friday afternoon at the SWOSU Baseball Field.
Johnson was spectacular for the Bulldogs, tossing 9.0 innings and allowing nine hits before leaving after three straight Mulerider hits to lead off the 10th inning. He was saddled with four earned runs and took the loss, moving to 1-1 on the year despite striking out seven batters.
Southern Arkansas used an infield single in the seventh inning to take a 1-0 lead but the Bulldogs responded quickly.
Chris Faulkner led off the bottom of the inning with a double off the right field fence and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt from
Tyler Rapp, setting up a sacrifice fly from
Jiro Morales that tied the game at 1-1.
That's where the score would stay until extra innings after SWOSU stranded two runners in the bottom of the ninth inning.
SWOSU's offense managed nine hits, including three by
Dalton Daniels and two from
Kale Thaxton, but they were limited to just one run as they dropped to 2-3 on the year and open the conference portion of the season 0-1. The two teams will play two, seven-inning games on Saturday at the Athletic Complex, starting at noon.
