Collins, Ojo Lead Dawgs Past the Drovers

WEATHERFORD, Okla. – SWOSU welcomed the University of Science and Arts to the Pioneer Cellular Event Center on Tuesday night, emerging 77-67 winners thanks to the strong play of Martell Collins and Ayo Ojo.
 
Collins and Ojo finished with near identical double-doubles. Collins, who played almost a quarter of the game with four fouls, finished with 21 points and 12 rebounds. Ojo also racked up 21 points while pulling down 11 boards, including an impressive eight on the offensive glass.
 
SWOSU would lead by as many as five in the first half as the Drovers refused to surrender. The Bulldogs hit just one 3-point shot, going 11-39 overall from the field. They did most of their damage at the line, holding a 16-4 advantage at the charity stripe. Southwestern would go into the half holding a slight 33-30 lead.
 
The shots began to fall for the Dawgs in the second half, as Ojo went a perfect 6-6 from the field to lead the way. Kenyon Borders chipped in with nine of his 11 points, including two big makes from deep that were assisted by Trent Washington. SWOSU would expand their lead to 13 points with 3:00 left in the game before settling for a ten point victory.
 
Offensive boards have been an emphasis for SWOSU this season, and it showed as they collected 23 offensive rebounds, resulting in 27 second chance points. The Dawgs also took care of the ball, only turning it over five times, and they did not allow a single point as a result of the turnovers. On the other side, SWOSU forced the Drovers into seven turnovers which resulted in 11 points.
 
"We play hard, these guys take good care of the ball," said Head Coach Bob Battisti. "I'm proud of Ayo Ojo, he finished with a double-double and had a good game for us this season."
 
The win moves Southwestern to 7-4. They will now head to Durant, Okla., to take on the Savage Storm of Southeastern Oklahoma State on Saturday, January 3 at 7:30 PM.
