WEATHERFORD, Okla. – An 11-point run to end the first set and a season-high 13 service aces lifted the SWOSU volleyball team to a 3-0 victory over visiting East Central on Tuesday night at Rankin Williams Fieldhouse. The Bulldogs won in straight sets by scores of 25-16, 25-17, 25-18.
Trailing 16-14 midway through the first set, SWOSU reeled off 11 straight points after
Joey Collins went back to serve. Collins had four service aces in the run, and five total for the set, as the Bulldogs came back to win the set 25-16. SWOSU hit .316 for the set after committing just two attack errors.
The second set was more of the same as SWOSU jumped on top 6-2 and built a lead as high as 22-10 on their way to the 25-17 victory. East Central would get one point closer in the third set, but SWOSU took the match in straight sets with a 25-18 win in the third.
With the win, the Bulldogs avenge an earlier loss to ECU with one of their best hitting performances of the conference season. SWOSU committed just 12 hitting errors and hit .267 after putting down 39 kills in three sets.
Alison Cole led the way with 10 kills while committing just one error and she finished with a hitting percentage of .474, the second-best by a Bulldog this season. Collins added nine kills and a season-high five aces while
Carly Zak put down eight kills against three errors.
Breann Whitaker dished out 28 assists and added four aces and three kills for the Bulldogs while
Kaila Lancaster had a game-high 14 digs for the SWOSU defense.
The victory improves SWOSU to 11-18 on the year and they pull into a tie with East Central for fourth place in the Great American Conference at 7-5. Another crucial match awaits the Bulldogs on Saturday, when they face third-place Arkansas Tech in Russellville in a match that will begin at 10 am.
