WEATHERFORD, Okla. – The Southwestern Oklahoma State University volleyball team made quick work of Henderson State on Friday night, picking up their first three-set sweep of conference play by scores of 25-17, 25-18, 25-20.
Shayne Haley got things started for the Bulldogs, putting down three kills in the opening 11 points and helping SWOSU build an 11-4 advantage in the first set. The Bulldogs would pull ahead by as many as 10 at 19-9 and cruise to take the set 25-17 behind five kills from
Joey Collins.
SWOSU again built an early lead in set two, taking an 8-2 lead and forcing the Lady Reddies to take a timeout. The Bulldogs held a double-digit lead for most of the set and finished HSU off 25-18 to take the 2-0 lead.
Carly Zak took control in the final set, scoring the final three points of the match for SWOSU on kills and finishing with five in the set. Her last effort gave the Bulldogs the set win at 25-20 and the match at 3-0.
Zak led the way for SWOSU with 14 kills and Collins had 12 with both players hitting above .300 for the match.
Alison Cole added nine kills in the middle and Haley finished with six from the rightside and a .400 hitting percentage.
Kiley Brennfoerder tied her season-high with eight assist blocks, leading SWOSU who finished with nine blocks as a team.
Kaila Lancaster and
Kenya Williams each had 11 digs for the Bulldogs, who limited Henderson State to a .155 hitting percentage.
The win improves the Bulldogs to 8-15 on the year and 4-2 in Great American Conference play. SWOSU will look to pick up their second victory of the weekend on Saturday afternoon when they host Ouachita Baptist at 1 pm.
