Jon Garfield

Jon Garfield enters his fourth season with the SWOSU football coaching staff and his third year as a full-time assistant in 2017. Garfield will be coaching the SWOSU quarterbacks for the second straight season after working with the Bulldogs wide receivers the past two years.

During his time on staff, Garfield has seen a drastic improvement in the SWOSU offense, with the Bulldogs putting up two of the top three seasons for passing yards in school history. Last season, SWOSU quarterback Marc Evans set a new single-season school record with 3,048 passing yards and he finished his two-year career with the Bulldogs after tossing 47 touchdown passes.

In Garfield’s first season as full-time coach at SWOSU, he helped the Bulldogs set a new single-season school record by averaging 32.2 points per game. The offensive resurgence helped SWOSU earn a berth in the 2015 Live United Texarkana Bowl – the first NCAA postseason game in school history.

Garfield, who was promoted to a full-time coach at SWOSU after serving as a graduate assistant in 2014, has tutored four wide receivers who have garnered All-Great American Conference honors at SWOSU, including All-American D.J. Jones, a two-time All-GAC selection as wide receiver who also earned accolades for his punt returns. Three receivers coached by Garfield – Jones (2015-16), Brad Smithey (2014) and Teverick Boyd (2014-15) rank in the top ten at SWOSU for career receiving yards and receptions.

Garfield previously spent two seasons at Menlo College coaching wide receivers, assisting with an offense that averaged 168.9 passing yards per game. He tutored three players who have earned invites to postseason all-star games, with one competing in the NAIA vs. DII Bowl and two in the All-American Bowl in the past two years.

Before entering coaching at the collegiate level, Garfield spent the 2011 season as a player personnel assistant with the San Jose Sabercats of the Arena Football League and four years coaching at the high school level in California. He was an assistant coach and special teams coordinator at Oak Grove HS (2010-11) for two seasons, spent 2009 as the offensive coordinator at Prospect HS and he held the same position for Lynbrook HS in 2008.

As a player, Garfield spent two years as the quarterback for De Anza Junior College in California before transferring to Chadron State (Neb.) College where he spent the 2007 season with the Eagles.

A native of Cupertino, Calif., Garfield completed his bachelor’s degree in Management from Menlo College in 2013 and he is now pursuing a master’s degree from SWOSU.
