David May enters year one at SWOSU as Special Teams Coordinator and will coach wide receivers and tight ends.
For the past two years, he coached alongside head coach Josh Kirkland at New Mexico Highlands as the Run Game Coordinator and Running Backs Coach.
May’s running game ranked third in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) in 2021 with 1,698 yards and nine touchdowns. He also mentored two running backs that both finished in the top-10 in conference rushing.
Prior to NMHU, May spent two years from 2018-20 at the University of the Incarnate Word where he was an Offensive Student Assistant. His primary focus was running backs and tight ends.
In his second year on staff he helped guide UIW to five wins, breaking several of the program’s records including Pass Completions, Pass Completion Percentage, All Purpose Yards, and Total Points. During this time, he helped mentor a rushing attack that tallied the most Rushing Yards in a single game with 402 yards versus Texas Southern, during this game the Cardinals also set a program record for total yards in a game with 840.
In May’s first season with the Cardinals he helped guide UIW to the best season in program history ending in a Southland Conference Championship and the first playoff appearance in program history in the first year under a new staff, the Cardinals were 1-10 the previous year.
A native of League City, Texas, May graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Sports Management from Incarnate Word in 2019 and will be pursuing a master’s degree in the same field at SWOSU.
