Softball Snags First GAC Win in Bethany

BETHANY, Okla. – SWOSU Softball picked up its first conference win of the season against SNU in game two of the three-game series, splitting the day with the Crimson Storm.

The Bulldogs will wrap up their three-game trip down I-40 tomorrow in the rubber match, scheduled for 2:00 p.m.

Game One
SNU 6, SWOSU 1

SWOSU and SNU were deadlocked until the fourth inning when the Crimson Storm put two on the board on a sac bunt and a wild pitch. The Dawgs got one back in the top of the sixth on a Skyla McPhillips single with the bases loaded, but that would be the only run scored by the Bulldog offense as SNU broke the game open in the bottom of the frame, scoring five to extend the lead to 6-1.

The Bulldogs recorded five hits, each by a different player, and left six runners on base.

Lily Barfield (L, 1-5) started in the circle for SWOSU, pitching three innings and allowing four hits and one run while walking three. Alexis Taylor and Jaycee McKee also saw action.

Game Two
SWOSU 8, SNU 4

The Bulldogs fell behind quickly in game two, allowing a run in the bottom half of the first, but the tide soon turned in the Dawgs' favor as they scored a run in each of the next three innings to build a 3-1 lead after four. In the second, third, and fourth innings, the SNU offense was neutralized by Blaire Gentry (W, 1-3), who earned her first win of the season. During that stretch, she retired nine straight batters.

In the top of the seventh, the Dawgs added to their lead, scoring five to extend it to 8-1. However, they would need those runs as SNU scored three in the bottom half of the final inning, leaving the bases loaded with the tying run at the plate.

Emily Wedel, Taylor McMahon, and Taylor McKee each had multi-hit games, with Wedel and McKee adding an RBI apiece. The Dawgs outhit the Crimson Storm 11-8 and committed one fewer error (1-2). All of the Bulldogs' hits were singles.

McKee recorded the final out on the mound as Gentry pitched a near-complete game.
