WEATHERFORD – SWOSU Baseball snapped its recent slump with a midweek victory over Oklahoma Baptist in a non-conference matchup Tuesday afternoon, winning 17-7 in eight innings.
The Bulldogs now sit at 16-19 on the season while holding a 7-14 mark in conference play heading into the final four weeks of the GAC regular season. SWOSU will need to climb back into the top eight of the standings to secure a postseason spot.
With a strong wind blowing straight out to left-center field, the conditions favored power hitting, and both teams took advantage. The home run barrage began in the third inning when
John Spoto and
Landon Meyer hit back-to-back shots over the outfield wall, bringing in three runs. In the following inning,
Keaton Fisher kept the ball in the air as well, launching a two-run home run to left field to give the Dawgs a 5-0 lead. SWOSU would continue to build momentum, extending the lead to 9-0 through four innings.
Oklahoma Baptist mounted a response in the fifth and seventh innings, scoring five unanswered runs to cut the Bulldogs' lead to four. In the top of the eighth, OBU sent its first ball over the fence when pinch hitter Jacob Campbell connected for a two-run home run, trimming the deficit to 10-7.
SWOSU answered immediately in the bottom half of the inning. After a walk and a single to open the frame,
Zach Makarewich became the fifth different Bulldog to hit a home run on the afternoon, sending a three-run shot past the outfield wall. Four more hits - all singles - along with a walk brought in the final runs of the game.
Landon Meyer delivered the final hit, driving in
Chris Clark and
Jose Mendoza to push the Bulldogs past the 10-run threshold and secure the eight-inning run-rule victory.
All nine Bulldogs recorded at least one hit and one RBI in the win. Mendoza posted his third multi-hit game of the season with a four-hit performance, while
Rusty Wortman and Meyer each added three hits.
Four pitchers saw action for SWOSU.
Kaegan Baker got the start, throwing two innings while allowing just one hit and recording one strikeout without giving up a run.
Kael Shelite earned the win, pitching 2.2 innings and allowing two hits and three runs.
SWOSU will return to action this Thursday and Friday in a home GAC series against Southeastern Oklahona State. The games were moved up a day in attempt to dodge forecasted storms. The doubleheader is scheduled for for noon Thursday. Game three is currently set for 1:00 pm on Friday.
