WEATHERFORD – A walk-off victory in game one highlighted SWOSU Baseball's split with Southeastern Oklahoma State on Thursday. The Bulldogs claimed a 6-5 win in the opener before falling 12-2 in the nightcap.
The two teams will meet Friday at 11:00 a.m. to decide the series after the start time was moved up due to forecasted weather.
Game One
SWOSU 6, SE 5
SWOSU saw its 5-1 lead evaporate late but answered with a walk-off win in the bottom of the ninth, defeating Southeastern after the Savage Storm scored two runs in both the eighth and ninth innings to tie the game.
Zach Makarewich delivered the game-winning hit with a two-out RBI single, scoring
Landon Meyer, who had drawn a walk earlier in the inning.
After falling behind 1-0 in the second, SWOSU steadily built its lead with a run in the third, two in the fourth, and single runs in both the fifth and sixth innings.
Meyer provided a key swing with his ninth home run of the season in the fifth, while
Chris Clark added an RBI single in the sixth to cap the Bulldogs' scoring.
Starting pitcher
Josh Doelitsch turned in his strongest outing of the season, working into the eighth inning. He scattered four hits, struck out six, and walked two before Southeastern chased him with a two-out, two-run home run. Despite his efforts, he was handed the no decision.
Leading 5-3 entering the ninth, SWOSU saw Southeastern rally again, using back-to-back singles to tie the game at 5-5.
Kaegan Baker (W) entered in relief and stranded the bases loaded to keep the game even.
In the bottom of the ninth, Meyer and
Kotaro Wakui drew consecutive two-out walks to set the stage for Makarewich's walk-off hit. The run marked the first allowed this season by Southeastern reliever Brock Zimmer in 11 appearances.
SWOSU outhit Southeastern 11-7.
Keaton Fisher led the offense, going 3-for-4 with an RBI, while Makarewich finished 2-for-5.
Game Two
SE 12, SWOSU 2
Southeastern steadily built its lead before a four-run sixth inning — highlighted by a three-run home run — broke the game open. The Storm added four more runs in the seventh to put the game out of reach.
SWOSU avoided the shutout with a pair of runs in the seventh, finishing with seven hits.
Jose Mendoza (2-for-2) had the lone extra-base hit with a double.
Landon Meyer(2-for-4) got runs on the board with his two RBI single.
Garrett Folmar (L) pitched 5.1 innings, allowing seven runs (six earned) on nine hits. Wil David and
Terrius Causey combined to throw the remaining innings in relief.
Southeastern finished with 13 hits.
