WEATHERFORD, Okla. – A 10th-inning walk-off home run from
Rusty Wortman sealed a four-game series sweep for SWOSU Baseball, as the Bulldogs defeated Adams State in extra innings Sunday at the SWOSU Athletic Complex.
The Bulldogs fell behind early in the finale, as the Grizzlies scored two runs in the first inning and added another in the third. For the first time this season, SWOSU was unable to score in its first at-bat.
The offense broke through in the fourth inning. Held hitless through three, SWOSU responded with five hits in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game at 3-3. RBI singles from
Zach Makarewich,
Keaton Fisher, and
Elijah Long brought the Bulldogs even.
SWOSU carried that momentum into the fifth, scoring two more runs to take a 5-3 lead. Adams State answered back in the seventh, tying the game with a two-RBI double to force extra innings.
The score remained deadlocked until Wortman delivered the decisive blow in the 10th, launching a walk-off home run to end the game and complete the sweep.
Five Bulldog pitchers saw action in the contest.
Will David started and worked into the sixth inning.
Kaegan Baker earned the win after throwing two scoreless innings in the ninth and 10th, stranding the go-ahead run at third base in the top of the 10th before SWOSU walked it off in the bottom half.
SWOSU finished with 11 hits to Adams State's 10.
Landon Meyer recorded his third straight three-hit game, finishing 3-for-5 with two runs scored. Wortman went 2-for-4 with a walk and two RBIs.
The Bulldogs improve to 6-2 on the young season and will return to action Tuesday, February 10, hosting Randall University in Weatherford before opening Great American Conference play later in the week in Arkansas.
