WEATHERFORD – SWOSU Baseball secured a series victory over Adams State on Saturday, sweeping the day's doubleheader by scores of 9-6 and 12-3 at the SWOSU Athletic Complex.
The Bulldogs also extended their streak to six, and seven straight games scoring in the first inning. Saturday's doubleheader featured two scheduled seven-inning contests. SWOSU will go for the series sweep Sunday at 11:00 a.m. in the finale, a nine-inning game moved up an hour from the originally scheduled noon start.
Game One
SWOSU 9, Adams State 6
Persistence proved key in the opener, as SWOSU answered a six-run second inning from Adams State with steady offense throughout. The Bulldogs scored in six consecutive innings — from the first through the sixth — to pull out the win.
Landon Meyer delivered a huge performance, finishing 3-for-4 with a home run and two doubles. He drove in four runs and scored another after hitting his first home run of the season.
After SWOSU finally had the game tied at 6-6 in the fourth,
Nolan McCrossin's RBI single in the fifth put SWOSU ahead for good.
Jose Mendoza followed two batters later with a sacrifice fly to add insurance, and Meyer's second double of the day capped the scoring an inning later in the sixth.
Jared Adams (W, 1-0) earned the win after throwing 5.0 innings. He allowed five hits in Adams State's big second inning but scattered just two hits the rest of the way.
Jayden Minter worked most of the sixth before
Kaegan Baker recorded the final four outs to earn the save.
Game Two
SWOSU 12, Adams State 3
SWOSU's bats stayed hot in game two, scoring in four innings and producing three crooked numbers — highlighted by a six-run fourth inning — to overpower the Grizzlies.
Josh Doelitsch (W, 1-0) turned in a strong start with plenty of run support, working six innings while striking out eight, walking two, and allowing just four hits.
Meyer stayed locked in at the plate, going 3-for-4 again with four more RBIs. After hitting his first homer of the season earlier in the day, Meyer launched two more in the nightcap. SWOSU finished with six extra-base hits, while
Keaton Fisher delivered a perfect 4-for-4 performance with two doubles.
Leading 5-2 in the fourth, the Bulldogs blew the game open with six runs to put the contest out of reach.
Garrett Coiner tossed a scoreless seventh inning to close out the win.
