WEATHERFORD - SWOSU Men's Basketball dropped a home game against Arkansas-Monticello, splitting the season series with the Boll Weevils after hot shooting from the visitors secured an 82-69 victory in Weatherford.
The loss moves the Dawgs to 10-15 overall and 7-12 in conference play, with just three games remaining in the regular season as they battle for a spot in the tournament field.
The Bulldogs fell behind early, making just one field goal in the first 11 minutes of play. That slow offensive start allowed UAM to find its rhythm from the perimeter, as the Boll Weevils knocked down six three-pointers in the first half, well above their season average of 6.2 per game. They led by as many as 14 in the first half.
SWOSU made just eight shots in the first half and shot 28.6 percent from the field. A last-second three-pointer by
Tucker Shepherd, however, gave the Bulldogs a bit of momentum heading into the break.
After a quick 4-0 run by the visitors to open the second half, SWOSU called a timeout just 54 seconds into the period. Both teams settled in and found better balance on both ends of the floor, but the early deficit proved too much for the Bulldogs to overcome.
SWOSU attempted to rally behind three consecutive three-pointers from Shepherd, but it was an all-time shooting night for UAM. The Boll Weevils finished with 13 made threes, their most against a division II opponent since 2021. This was just their third time shooting above 50% from deep this season.
The Dawgs shot just 38.3 percent from the field (23-60) and knocked down 13 three-pointers as a team. It marks the first time this season that SWOSU has lost when making at least 13 threes, as the Bulldogs were previously 4-0 in those games. UAM also held a significant edge on the glass, outrebounding SWOSU 42-28, and controlled the paint with a 26-14 advantage in points inside.
Ty Frierson led the Dawgs with 15 points and four assists.
Tobias Roland added 14 points, while Shepherd finished with 12, all coming from beyond the arc on four made three-pointers.
Kray Rogers and
Elijah Jordan each contributed 11 points.
