SPRING, Texas. – SWOSU Women's Golf started the spring season in Spring, Texas, at the Southern Invitational, where they placed tied for 10th out of 15 teams.
Maria Velilla finished tied for third on the week after making up nine spots on the final day.
No. 6 UT Tyler won the event by posting a +17 final score, with their opening round being the only under-par round as a team this week. DBU, the No. 2 team in the nation, finished second at +34, while Rogers State and No. 18 St. Mary's (TX) finished T-3 at +44.
Velilla finished in a tie for third, shooting +5 for the tournament and -1 on the final day. She improved her score every round, going 76-74-71, and moved up nine spots in the final 18 holes. Her consistency has been apparent since the fall; she has notched top-15 performances in five of the six tournaments and top-three finishes in three tournaments.
Daniela Espinoza was the second-best golfer of the week for SWOSU, finishing T-35 while also improving her score every round, going 80-79-73 and finishing at +16. Her final round was just one over par; it featured two of her four birdies in the tournament, and she had just three bogeys. She has finished in the top half of the field in all six tournaments she has competed in this season.
London Wilson and
Nerea Anton wrapped up the Lady Dawgs lineup with +21 finishes. Wilson totaled four birdies on the week, while Anton recorded 14 pars in her opening round. SWOSU played with just four golfers this week, taking the score of everyone for each round
The Lady Bulldogs will be back on the course in two weeks for the Diffee Ford/Lincoln Invitational at Kickingbird G.C. in Edmond on March 2-3.
