WEATHERFORD – Behind a record-setting defensive performance from
Landry Allen, and a shooting percentage that matched SWOSU's season high, SWOSU Women's Basketball earned a key conference win Thursday night inside the Pioneer Event Center, defeating Northwestern Oklahoma State 68-60.
Allen delivered one of the most dominant defensive games in Division II this season, finishing with 18 points, 13 blocks, and three steals in a double-double effort. Her 13 blocks surpassed the SWOSU program record she already held, set a new Great American Conference single-game record, and now stands as the most blocks recorded by any NCAA Division II player in a game this season.
While Allen anchored the defensive side of the ball, SWOSU turned in another strong shooting performance, matching its season high shooting mark (49%) where they did not shoot below 40% in any quarter of the game.
SWOSU set the tone early with an 8-0 run to open the game, but the Lady Rangers responded behind hot perimeter shooting. Northwestern knocked down 4-of-5 three-pointers in the opening quarter, keeping pace in a high-scoring first 10 minutes that saw both teams shoot better than 50 percent.
Payten Conde helped SWOSU stay in control defensively, recording four steals in the first quarter as the Lady Bulldogs forced seven Ranger turnovers to take a 23-18 lead after one.
The Lady Bulldogs created separation in the second quarter, outscoring Northwestern 19-9 to build a 42-27 halftime advantage. SWOSU's defense tightened significantly, holding the Lady Rangers to 27 percent shooting in the period. Allen anchored the surge with five blocks in the quarter alone.
Northwestern made its push coming out of the break, edging SWOSU 18-14 in the third quarter to chip away at the deficit. The Lady Rangers continued to apply pressure into the fourth, and SWOSU's nine turnovers in the final period kept the visitors within striking distance. Northwestern trimmed the lead to six with 2:25 remaining, but SWOSU answered to finally secure the win.
SWOSU matched its season-high shooting percentage at 49% in the victory. The Lady Bulldogs finished 7-of-22 (32%) from three-point range and went 11-of-18 (61%) at the free throw line. Northwestern shot 38 percent from the field, connected on 8-of-17 (47%) from deep, and went a perfect 6-for-6 at the foul line.
Sincere Jackson added 12 points and six rebounds.
Lacy Brough finished with 11 and a team high five assists.
Payten Conde chipped in eight points with her four first quarter steals.
Northwestern held a slight rebounding edge, 35-33, and narrowly won the turnover battle 20-19 after SWOSU's turnover ridden fourth quarter.
With the win, SWOSU will look to complete a perfect week Saturday when Southern Nazarene comes to Weatherford for a 1:00 p.m. tipoff. The Lady Bulldogs fell to the Crimson Storm 70-57 before Christmas break and will look to avenge that earlier loss.
