DURANT, Okla. - SWOSU Baseball captured their third Great American Conference series victory after an 11-run ninth inning created a gap too large for any comeback attempt by Southeastern. The Bulldogs went on to earn a 17-11 win in Monday's rubber match.
The Bulldogs now sit at 20-15 overall and 9-14 inside the GAC. With nine games remaining in conference play, SWOSU needs to make up some ground to make the postseason, currently sitting in ninth place.
After falling behind 3-0 after the first inning, the Bulldogs knotted up the scoreboard in the third after a three-run home run by
Gage Gaunt that brought in both
Bodi Wallar and
Campbell Sullivan. The home team home team would add two in their half of the third before SWOSU would once again chop the deficit down to just one after Sullivan doubled to score
Reece Burke an inning later.
Two scoreless innings in the fifth and sixth innings made way to a game tying inning after SWOSU scored two runs thanks to a second home run by Gaunt and a Foufoulas walk that brought
Ty Eastwood home. Southeastern belted a solo homer in the bottom of the frame to even the game at 6-6 after seven innings.
Sebastian Diaz threw the opening 2.2 innings, followed by
Ayden Page (W, 2-2) who came on in relief and pitched 5.2 innings and only allowed four hits and just one run while striking out five.
Greg Ross collected the final three outs in the ninth, in relief of
Jackson Blue.
When the ninth inning came around the bats caught fire for the Bulldogs. After loading the bases with no outs SWOSU scored two thanks to a walk and a hit by pitch. Four straight singles brought in the next four runs to make the score 12-6. A pitching change would not be the answer for Southeastern as SWOSU then sent three straight balls over the fence – a three-run bomb by
Markus Coronado and solo shots by
Connor Jeffers and Sullivan – representing the final runs scored by the Dawgs as their lead exploded to 17-6.
The 11 runs scored are the most in a single inning this season.
Gaunt led the way for the Bulldogs going 4-6 at the plate with five RBIs and two home runs. He homered four times in the series and had one in each of the three games. Eastwood, Coronado and Sullivan all had three hits to their name with a combined six RBIs. Jeffers, Burke and Wallar all had multiple hits on the day.
SWOSU has a quick turnaround when they face USAO in a non-conference midweek matchup tomorrow, April 8 at 4:00 pm. This weekend the Dawgs will welcome Ouachita Baptist in the final home games of the year on April 11-12.
The doubleheader portion of the series will commence Friday at noon. Senior Day will conclude the series Saturday at 1:00 pm. Â
