WICHITA, Kan. – SWOSU Softball Swept the Jets in a Tuesday midweek non-conference matchup. A three run fourth inning was the difference in game one and in game two the big inning came in the sixth, with another three-run frame to put the Jets out of reach, despite a late seventh inning push.
SWOSU (9-9, 2-4 GAC) returns to conference play this weekend when they host Southern Nazarene for another three-game series beginning Friday, March 7.
Game One – SWOSU 7, Newman 3
SWOSU used three double digit scoring innings to outpace the Jets and take a 7-3 victory in a game where
Jaycee McKee Earned her first win in the circle.
The hitting was led by
Riley Lusk, she went a perfect 4-4 with two extra base hits and two runs batted in.
Chesnie Hewitt,
Katie Boline and
Sierra Woods all contributed two hits and a total of three RBIs to help the scoring effort for the Dawgs. Boline's double in the first inning brought in Hewitt for the opening run before Lusk brought in Boline with a double of her own.
The fourth inning was the difference, with two outs Hewitt reached first on an error and stole second,
Kaylee Barkley doubled to bring Hewitt in before a Triple from Boline added another run to the board. After a pitching change by Newman Lusk would double to bring in Boline to set the score at 7-3 which would remain to be the final.
McKee (W, 1-3) pitched the final six innings after coming in for
Alexis Taylor after just one inning. She gave up no extra base hits and only three hits total.
Game Two – SWOSU 5, Newman 4
The Bulldogs escaped game two after a late push by Newman. After going up 5-1 in the sixth inning the Jets would make a push in the bottom of the seventh, scoring three runs and having a runner in scoring position with just one out, but after a fly out and ground out the Dawgs survived 5-4 to earn the sweep.
Kaylee Barkley on the hitting side had two hits and an RBI to her name, but she was thrown into the circle in the bottom of the seventh with the score at 5-4 with a runner on first and no outs. She calmly got the next three batters out in just three pitches to earn her first save of the season.
Riley Lusk (W, 1-2) gets her first win of the year after pitching 4.0 innings and allowing 3 hits and just one run to her name. While batting she went 2-4 at the plate and scored a run for the Dawgs.
