SWOSU Falls in Extra Innings to Blossoms

MONTICELLO, Ark. – SWOSU Softball couldn't pull out an extra inning affair in the series finale at Arkansas-Monticello on Monday, falling 7-6 in nine innings despite scoring four runs in the seventh to force bonus softball.

That seventh inning was yet another late game comeback for the Dawgs this season. SWOSU trailed 6-2 and was down to their final three outs before batting around and scoring four runs to tie. Despite the successful inning, they stranded the go-ahead run 60 feet away on third base, which eventually came back to haunt them in the extra inning loss.

After SWOSU jumped ahead 1-0 in the first inning thanks to a Kaylee Barkley RBI double, the Blossoms controlled much of the game by scoring four runs in the second inning and another two runs in the fourth. The Dawgs started their claw back in the sixth with a single run, before the final push in the seventh.

In the ninth inning, UAM got a leadoff single and small balled her into scoring position. With two outs, they delivered a walk-off single off reliver Jaycee McKee to end the game. It was McKee's first run allowed in an otherwise great outing in relief of Alexis Taylor who threw the game's first four innings.

SWOSU ended up outhitting the Blossoms 10-9 in the game and stranded 10 total runners on base. Four had multi-hit games, headed by Chesnie Hewitt (2-3) who doubled, walked twice, and scored twice.

The loss wraps up a winless week for the Dawgs. They were swept on Tuesday by Northwestern at home, before suffering three more setbacks in Monticello.

They'll look to get back in the win column on Friday, March 21 with a doubleheader against Southern Arkansas in Weatherford. The series concludes a day later on Saturday, March 22.
