WICHITA FALLS, Texas – SWOSU Softball notched a third win in a row after beating Midwestern State 4-1 in the first game of the day but had that win streak snapped after suffering a 5-2 setback to the Mustangs in game two.
The Bulldogs finish 3-1 on the weekend at the Mustang Round-Up and move to 5-3 overall on the season heading into the Raising Cane's Festival next week that will be held in the OKC metro. It will be the final non-conference tournament prior to conference play, which is set to begin February 21-22.
Game One
SWOSU 4, Midwestern State 1
The Dawgs got a complete game from freshman
Alexis Taylor in the circle and provided enough run support to get the job done.
SWOSU scored single runs in the second and third innings with RBI doubles from
Shallen Mershon and
Riley Lusk and added two runs of insurance in the seventh spark plugged by a one-out triple from
Chesnie Hewitt.
Hewitt finished 2-4 in the game with a double and the triple. MSU nearly scored in the second inning after a two-out single to the outfield followed a double, but Hewitt's throw to the plate from center field was in time to tag out a would-be run scorer.
The Mustangs scored an inning later, making the score 2-1 in favor of the Dawgs, but that'd be all Taylor would allow in her outing. She struck out seven, walked one, and scattered seven hits – six singles and a double.
Game Two
Midwestern State 5, SWOSU 2
SWOSU fell behind by a run in the first inning before scoring two runs in the third to lead it 2-1.
Riley Lusk singled in a run followed by
Skyla McPhillips who doubled in Lusk.
It'd be the only scoring offense the Bulldogs would conjure up, as they went on to be held scoreless through the next four innings. MSU regained the lead in the fourth and extended that lead in the fifth with back-to-back two-run frames.
Jaycee McKee (L, 0-3) suffered the loss in the circle in 4.1 innings of action. She was relieved by
Hannah Nieuwenhuis who faced the final seven batters of the game.
McPhillips was the lone hitter with a multi-hit game. She finished 2-3 with an RBI.
