WEATHERFORD – SWOSU Baseball chipped away at an early deficit, only to watch Oklahoma Baptist score the last 11 runs of the game in a shortened 19-7 final.
The Dawgs trailed 7-0 before three straight crooked innings had them down just 8-7 after the fourth. OBU, who hit six home runs on the day, had three of those come in the late innings and delivered the final blow with a six-run seventh. The Bison scored six runs in the first inning, and the final inning, as part of their 19-run, 20-hit day.
SWOSU racked up 13 hits of their own – highlighted by Gage Gaunt who finished 3-for-4 with two doubles and a home run. Gaunt's long ball came in the fourth inning when he blasted a three-run bomb to get SWOSU back within one run. Two more were stranded on base later in the inning, preventing a tie or lead change and further momentum. Five others produced multi-hit games. Sean Monsour tripled in a run in the second inning and finished 2-4.
All four arms that threw for the Bulldogs allowed runs. Philip Sanders (L, 2-3) suffered the loss in 3.1 innings of action.
The loss drops SWOSU to 8-6 on the year and to 1-5 in conference play. They'll look to rebound Saturday (March 1) with a doubleheader against the Bison beginning at noon.
