SWOSU Defeats UAM on the Road for Season Sweep

MONTICELLO, Ark. – The SWOSU women's basketball team allowed just 46 points to Arkansas-Monticello, earning their fourth win in five games behind Layni Zinn's 20 points.

The Lady Bulldogs, now 14-11 overall and 10-9 in the GAC, have played their way into the current five seed in the conference. With only three games remaining on the 2025 schedule, they will next travel to Magnolia, Arkansas to face Southern Arkansas on Sunday, Feb. 23, at 1:00 p.m.

The Lady Dawgs entered the game with a defensive-minded game plan, which paid off. They allowed a mere four total points in the first quarter, as the Blossoms struggled to find their rhythm, going 2-10 from the field while committing eight turnovers to SWOSU's four. Layni Zinn single-handedly outscored the home team in the first frame, notching six points.

By the end of the first 20 minutes, the Blossoms had managed only 17 points, the lowest first-half mark allowed by SWOSU this season. The Lady Dawgs themselves had a modest scoring effort, managing 25 points on 11-28 (39.3%) shooting, including just one three-point shot. However, they leveraged a 15-7 turnover margin to gain extra possessions and outscore the home team 15-6 in points off turnovers.

After an evenly matched third quarter, SWOSU created some breathing room in the first 60 seconds of the fourth, embarking on a 7-0 run while forcing two turnovers to take a 45-30 lead. They maintained a comfortable advantage for the remainder of the game, ultimately closing out the contest with a 57-46 victory. SWOSU led for the final 38 minutes of the game, securing their fourth win in five outings.

The 46 points surrendered to Arkansas-Monticello marked the lowest point total allowed by the Lady Bulldogs this season. The Blossoms shot 16-44 (36.4%) from the field and 5-17 (29.4%) from three-point range. SWOSU shot 22-54 (40.7%) overall but only 3-21 (14.3%) from beyond the arc. Notably, when SWOSU shoots above 40%, they boast an 8-1 record on the year.

Layni Zinn scored 20 points for the second time in as many weeks, shooting 9-13 from the field and grabbing seven rebounds. Averi Zinn chipped in eight points and dished out a team-high four assists.
