ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – The SWOSU men's basketball team traveled into Arkansas to play Henderson State in an early Thursday tipoff due to inclement weather. An offensive avalanche by the Reddies in the second half led to SWOSU falling 87-78.
The Bulldogs started about as good as you can ask for, 5-6 from the deep ball and leading by as many as 10 with a score of 23-13 with seven minutes left in the half. Henderson State began to force uncomfortable possessions, leading to late forced shots in the shot clock. On the other side of the court, they were able to get inside to make consistent buckets, fighting back for a one-point lead at 30-29 in just five minutes of game time.
SWOSU managed to end the half narrowly on top, 33-31. The Bulldogs gained 13 points from the bench, led by Tucker Shepherd with eight points who led all Dawgs. The freshman shot a perfect 3-3 from the field and 2-2 from beyond the arc.
In the final half of play the rim was kind to the home team as Henderson State shot 23-32 (71.9%) in the half and 7-12 (58.3) from three-point land. The Bulldogs were able to score 45 second half points but were not able to keep up with the 56 put up by the Reddies. The Reddies held a lead of as many as 16 at 79-63 with 4:49 left in the second half.
One area where the Dawgs failed to keep under control was fast break points, an area dominated by Henderson State 15-3.
Henderson State's 35-62 (56.5%) from the field was the highest percentage shot in any GAC game by any SWOSU opponent so far this season.
Tobias Roland gave the Bulldogs 17 points and three steals, both categories lead the way for SWOSU. Kray Rogers added 15 on 4-5 from the deep ball. MJ Warrior had 14 and dished out five assists.
SWOSU, who now sits at 7-5 overall and 4-3 in the GAC, will stay in Arkadelphia to face off against Ouachita Baptist on Saturday, January 11 at 3:00 pm.
