SWOSU Victorious over Orediggers in Season Opener

WEATHERFORD – SWOSU Baseball earned a win in the season opener over the Colorado School of Mines thanks to three double-digit scoring innings in an 8-3 final.

The win marked JR Head's first as a collegiate head coach.

The Orediggers were shut out by starting pitcher Philip Sanders until the top of the fifth inning, when they finally broke through with two runs to tie the game. Their momentum was short-lived though, as the Dawgs answered in their next at-bat. With two outs in the bottom half of the fifth, Bodi Waller hit a pop-up in the infield that was misjudged and dropped, allowing two runs to score and giving SWOSU a 4-2 lead. It was one of seven errors Mines committed in the ballgame. The Bulldogs then led the rest of the way.

In the seventh, Mines would inch closer by scoring a run to make it a 4-3 game, but SWOSU would respond with two runs in each the bottom of the seventh and eighth to put the game out of reach.

Markus Coronado, Gage Gaunt and Waller all produced multiple hit games. Gaunt and Ty Eastwood each had two RBIs to their name.

Sanders (W, 1-0) notched the win in the opening game of the season by throwing 7.0 innings while giving up six hits and three earned runs with a strike out and no walks.

Ayden Page and Eastwood each threw an inning in relief without allowing a run.

SWOSU (1-0) will be back on the diamond for a doubleheader against the Orediggers starting at 12:00 pm tomorrow, before closing out the series on Sunday Feb. 2 with one final game.
