MONKEY ISLAND, Okla. – SWOSU Men's Golf and freshman
Jack Phillips both led the field after the first day of play at the Missouri Southern Invitation before a bogey filled second round dropped the Dawgs to a seventh-place overall finish in the third tournament of the fall.
The tournament, originally scheduled for three rounds/54 holes, was shortened due to inclement weather that popped up during Monday's would-be second round. Tuesday saw the final 18 holes completed of the newly formatted 36-hole event.
The Dawgs were able to capitalize on 21 team birdies in the opening round to hold a four-shot lead heading into Tuesday. SWOSU could not maintain the hot streak, with just nine birdies in round two and 11-over par on the day.
Conrado Diaz Ermacora put himself in contention for the title after a two-under 70 in the first round left him tied for fourth, but a 74 (+2) in the second round pushed him back to a tie for 10th by the end of the event. He was the top finisher for the Dawgs in his best performance yet as a Bulldog.
Jack Phillips (T-16) had the lowest round of any Bulldog this year on Monday when he fired a four-under 68, which left him in first place and looking like the person to beat after day one. The second day did not go in his favor after shooting +8 on the front nine with a quad-bogey on hole nine. He finished the tournament out strong though with an eagle on hole 18 to end the round with a five-over 77.
Ryan Carlisle (T-24th) had two consistent rounds for the Dawgs with a pair of 73s on his scorecard. He was able to sink four birdies in the tournament, three of those on day one.
Lucas Vidal also carded a 73 in round one which included five birdies on the back nine. He finished the tournament at +6.
Lukas Hendricks' best round came in the second, finishing +3 with three birdies.
SWOSU will next look forward to their next event, The Perkins Cup, held at Prairie West G.C on October 3rd. The event will feature match play on their home course against Northwestern Oklahoma State.
