JOPLIN, Mo. – The Dawgs were able to come away with the win on the road against Missouri Southern State after two second half goals that led them to a 2-1 victory.
SWOSU's defense was the difference on Saturday, only allowing two shots on goal and four total shots. The Dawgs aggressive offense was certainly part of the defensive success, taking 15 shots – eight of those on goal.
After a scoreless first half, the first goal came from Ruth Vasquez to the top left corner to break the 0-0 tie in the 48th minute. An insurance goal came from Madelyn Kitchen to the high right corner to make the deficit too much for the Lions. Both goals were the first of the season for Vasquez and Kitchen.
With the Bulldogs leading 2-0, MSSU avoided the shutout with a goal in the 78th minute.
The final score does not tell the whole story of the game in this one. SWOSU dominated the Lions in shots (15-4) and shots on goal (8-2), and didn't allow any corner kicks (3-0).
SWOSU improves to 1-2-1 and will look to start a winning streak next week when they host Fort Hays State on September 19th at 5:00 pm at the SWOSU Athletic Complex.
