Senior Day Success: Softball Claims Series Win Over UAM

WEATHERFORD – The SWOSU Softball team won their final home series of 2024 with a 6-5 win against Arkansas-Monticello. The Bulldogs end with four weekend series wins in conference play in Weatherford to just one series loss.

SWOSU heads to Arkadelphia for their last series of the year. They will face Henderson State, starting with a Friday game at 5 pm on April 26.

The Bulldogs came out for their last contest at the SWOSU Athletic Complex and took control of the game with six unanswered runs from the second to the fifth. Arkansas-Monticello outhit the Dawgs, but senior Courtney Hill kept the Cotton Blossom offense at bay until a fierce comeback attempt in the final frame.

Almost the exact same situation from game two unfolded once again. For the second straight game, SWOSU took a sizable lead into the top of the seventh before eventually winning by one. A 6-1 lead slowly dwindled for the home team. Arkansas-Monticello went two up, two down to start the inning and then knocked four consecutive singles to slim the lead to 6-3.

A two RBI base hit turned into the game ending play at third base when Skyla McPhillips made the connection with Rebeca Fajardo to tag the UAM base runner out at third and secure a Senior Day win for the Bulldogs.

SWOSU got on the board in the second inning off a Fajardo double to bring Riley Lusk home. Then, an error from the Cotton Blossoms scored Fajardo from second for a one-run advantage. They continued in the third, knocking four of their nine hits in the frame. McPhillips, Jordyn Wadley, and Jadyn Hook all drove in runs to make it 5-1.

In the fifth, Fajardo scored her second run of the game due to a Hook base hit for the Bulldogs' sixth straight run. This score proved to be the difference in the game after the late game drama from UAM. SWOSU stranded nine runners. They left players on base in every inning but the sixth.

Hill (W, 4-14) got the complete game win in her final home game in a Bulldog uniform, striking out four in 7.0 innings. Fajardo totaled two hits, two runs scored, and an RBI. Chesnie Hewitt also had a multi-hit game for SWOSU. Jadyn Hook batted in two runs.
