WEATHERFORD – SWOSU Softball bounced back from a 3-1 game one defeat to earn a split against Arkansas Monticello after beating the visiting Blossoms 8-7 in the day's second game.
The two will meet Saturday at an updated time, 1:30 pm, to decide who wins the series. The time was pushed back an hour and a half with intentions of dodging rain in the forecast. Five seniors will also be honored on Saturday.
Game One – UAM 3, SWOSU 1
Three early runs from UAM gave them the run support needed to get the win. Three of their six hits came in innings one and two, as they got an RBI single in the first and a two RBI triple in the second.
The Bulldogs got an RBI ground out from
Dani Carmo in the third which cut into the deficit but could not conjure up any additional runs in the game. SWOSU stranded nine in total including the bases loaded (with one out) in the sixth.
The offense outhit UAM 8-6 on the scoreboard.
Maddie Rahon represented SWOSU's lone extra-base hit and finished 2-3 at the plate with a walk.
Courtney Hill pitched the entire way and struck out eight while walking two.
Game Two – SWOSU 8, UAM 7
The Bulldogs continued hitting in game two, finishing with 14 hits including a pair of doubles from
Blaire Gentry.
SWOSU built a 7-1 lead by the fourth inning before enduring a comeback attempt from UAM that saw them score three runs in the fifth and another three in the seventh.
With the bases loaded and an 8-6 score in the final inning, a sacrifice fly turned into a game-ending double play after
Jordyn Wadley cut off a throw from the outfield and threw out the tying run at third base. The run scored to get UAM to seven, but the final out was made during the sequence.
Gentry, who was 3-4 on the day at the plate, also pitched into the seventh to earn the win. She struck out eight but walked five.
Courtney Hill came on in relief of Gentry in the seventh to earn her third save of the year.
Even with 14 hits, SWOSU still stranded 10 base runners in the game. Six players had a multi-hit game.
Maddie Rahon (2-4) drove in a team high three runs.
