Weevils Walk It Off Twice

MONTICELLO, Ark. – SWOSU Baseball was victim to a pair of walk-off losses against Arkansas Monticello on Friday to start the series. Final scores on the day were 8-7 and 3-2.

The Bulldogs will try to salvage the series tomorrow with a third and final game of the series beginning at noon.

Game One – UAM 8, SWOSU 7

Trailing 7-2 entering their final at-bat, the Dawgs plated five to tie the game up before having the comeback spoiled by a Weevil walk off in the bottom half.

Marco Barrera gave SWOSU a quick 1-0 lead with a lead-off home run to start the game. He finished 2-4 with two runs scored. UAM went on to gain a lead by the third inning and extended their margin with small scoring innings throughout.

SWOSU's five-run ninth was given life with two Weevil errors, mixed with two free passes. The bats made those hurt, with three RBI hits including a Campbell Sullivan double early in the frame and a Markus Coronado sacrifice fly which scored the tying run.

Aside from Barrera, Jackson Syring also notched a two-hit game including a double. He too scored twice.

Rece Parker got the no decision in his start. He went 6.2 innings, struck out eight, and allowed five runs. Philip Sanders relieved Parker, before giving way to Ayden Page in the ninth.

Game Two – UAM 3, SWOSU 2

SWOSU was limited to just two hits in the game, but both came in the sixth when they were able to equalize a 2-0 deficit. Ty Eastwood led the inning off with a single to break up the no-hitter and Markus Coronado eventually delivered a two RBI single to tie the game at 2-2.

The Dawgs survived a seventh inning scare after UAM nearly hit a walk-off grand slam with two outs, but Campbell Sullivan rose up over the left field fence to rob the home run and keep the game alive.

Despite the spectacular play, SWOSU couldn't build off it in the next at-bat and eventually got walked off in extra innings an inning later.

Jackson Phillips started on the mound and pitched 4.0 innings. Grant Ewy threw three scoreless innings of relief as the beneficiary of Sullivan's play in the outfield. Tyler Fortin and Ayden Page split the final frame in the eighth.

UAM finished with 11 hits in the game, matching the runners they left on base.
