Baseball Bombs 11 Home Runs in Run-Rule Win

WICHITA, Kan. – SWOSU Baseball took a midweek trip to Wichita and faced off against Newman in a non-conference slugfest that ended in a 25-13 run-rule victory. The fun day at the ballpark was highlighted by an explosive second inning that saw the offense score 12 runs and hit six home runs.

What a day it was for the Dawgs. 25 runs, 21 hits, and 11 home runs later, SWOSU added another tally in the win column. Four Bulldogs hit multiple home runs led by Jackson Syring who hit four of them en route to a 5-for-5 day at the plate with nine RBIs. Marco Barrera matched Syring with a 4-for-4 at the plate, with two home runs, two doubles, and four RBIs. Geoff Marlow and Reece Burke also hit two home runs apiece.

The Bulldogs sent 16 to the plate in the second inning and the six home runs in the frame came from five different players. Jackson Syring, Geoff Marlow, and Reece Burke hit back-to-back-to-back home runs while Markus Coronado and Marco Barrera added theirs later in the inning. Syring concluded the inning's scoring with his second home run of the frame. Ty Eastwood added a two RBI base hit mixed in with the multitude of bombs. 10 of SWOSU's 21 hits in the contest came in the second inning.

SWOSU wasn't quiet in the first inning either where they scored three runs. Newman handed them the runs by way of a wild pitch that scored one and an error that scored two more. The Jets had life in their first opportunity to bat, homering twice and holding a 4-3 advantage after one. That lead lasted just minutes.

Three more Bulldog runs were added in fourth. Marco Barrera hit another homer and Geoff Marlow brought Ty Eastwood home with a sacrifice fly to move the lead to 18-8. A single score from Newman kept the game from run-rule territory until the sixth.

SWOSU flexed their power again as Syring, Marlow, and Burke hit consecutive home runs for the second time in the contest. Five runs were scored off those knocks and the Dawgs had a 23-9 lead. Just for good measure, Syring hit a fourth and final bomb to seal the deal and get SWOSU to their final run total.

The Dawgs had multiple NCAA Division II all-time single-game records either tied or narrowly missed. As a team, SWOSU's six home runs in the second inning tied for the most in a single inning in D2 history. The 11 collective home runs hit by the team tied for second all-time in D2. Syring's two home runs in that second inning places him on a long list of D2 players to hit two in the same inning. No D2 player has ever hit three in an inning. His four home runs in the contest also tied him for second in D2 history.

The Bulldogs will look to ride the momentum of this win into their conference weekend series with Arkansas-Monticello. That series starts in Monticello on April 19.
