WEATHERFORD – SWOSU Baseball got their first GAC series victory in style on Saturday by beating Southeastern in both games to secure a 3-0 sweep. The Bulldogs run-ruled the Savage Storm in the day's first game before completing a come from behind win in the second game.
The Bulldogs move to 13-7 on the season and get back above .500 in conference play at 5-4. They'll be on the road next weekend to face East Central in another three-game league series.
SWOSU combined for 33 runs and 35 hits in Saturday's 14 innings of action.
Game One – SWOSU 17, Southeastern 7 (7 inn.)
In a game that featured 25 combined free bases from either walks or hit by pitches, the Bulldogs found stability from reliever Ernesto Hidrogo (W, 2-1) on the mound in the late innings while the offense began teeing off on Southeastern's pitching.
After just one hit through three innings, SWOSU proceeded to rack up 15 more from the fourth to the seventh inning in the eventual run-rule. Leading the offense was Sean Monsour who finished a perfect 4-4 at the plate with two doubles, a walk, and five runs scored. Marco Barrera and Ty Eastwood both had three hits apiece. Eastwood matched Monsour with two doubles.
SWOSU led 3-1 after two innings and had the lead trimmed to 3-2 in the top of the fourth before hanging run counts of 5-2-4-3 to close the game from the bottom of the fourth on.
Hidrogo threw the final 2.2 innings and allowed just one hit to earn the win.
Josh Rains got his first start of the season and threw 3.2 innings before giving way to the bullpen.
Game Two – SWOSU 16, Southeastern 15
SWOSU trailed 7-2 in the third inning and 13-5 after the top of the sixth but used a nine-run bottom of the sixth to eliminate the deficit and got two more an inning later to walk-off the Savage Storm in the finale.
After the huge lead change in the sixth, Southeastern spoiled Ty Eastwood's save opportunity and regained the lead with two runs in their half of the seventh before the Dawgs eventually won it.
In the final inning, a balk allowed Connor Jeffers to tie the game after he led off the inning with a single and got to third following an Eric Foufoulas double. Markus Coronado delivered the game winning hit shortly after.
SWOSU's marathon nine-run sixth saw home runs from Marco Barrera and Reece Burke and a triple and double from Jackson Syring, highlighting an eight-hit inning where the Dawgs sent 13 to the plate. It came in response to a six-run top half by Southeastern which, at the time, sucked all momentum from the home side.
Eastwood was eventually handed the win. He was one of five arms to throw in the game. Jackson Phillips (2.1 IP) got the start and allowed seven runs before he handed the ball to Tyler Leachner who threw the next 3.0 innings.
12 of SWOSU's 19 hits went for extra bases.
