WEATHERFORD – SWOSU Baseball won both games against Adams State on Friday to begin the four-game series. The Bulldogs used five home runs and 12 total extra-base hits to provide plenty of run support for their pitching on the day.
The series concludes Saturday with another doubleheader beginning at 11am in Weatherford.
Game One – SWOSU 12, ASU 5 (7 inn.)
Six of SWOSU's nine hits went for extra bases including two home runs from
Justin Breen and another from
Geoff Marlow.
After the Dawgs surrendered a first inning home run following a walk, they responded with a four-run bottom half capped off by Breen's two-run home run to regain the lead for good.
Breen drove in three more with one swing of the bat with a three-run bomb in the fifth as part of SWOSU's second four-run inning of the game. They sealed the deal with three more runs in the sixth, two from Marlow who homered to left field after a
Sean Monsour triple led the inning off.
Rece Parker (W, 1-0) earned the win after throwing six innings on the mound. He struck out eight for a second consecutive outing and walked four. ASU used a pair of home runs to score four of their five runs and had an unearned run in the sixth.
Tyler Leachner had help from
Tyler Fortin to finish the seventh out and give the Bulldogs the win in the series opener.
Game Two – SWOSU 10, ASU 5
With a similar theme from game one, the Grizzlies struck first in the opening frame before SWOSU roared back with runs in the bottom half.
Geoff Marlow hit a two-run home run and
Justin Breen singled to center to lead 3-1 after the initial inning.
Jackson Phillips (W, 2-0) struck out 13 in his outing, his most in a Bulldog uniform. He pitched six innings and exited with a 7-5 lead after ASU put up a three spot in the sixth.
Josh Rains entered in relief and for a second consecutive outing, earned a multi-inning save after holding the visitor offense scoreless from the seventh inning on.
With the margin tighter, the Dawgs added insurance with three more runs after RBIs from
Ty Eastwood,
Markus Coronado, and
Kade Folmar.
Jackson Syring homered in the game, a two-run shot in the fifth, his second of the season.
