WEATHERFORD – SWOSU Baseball earned a series sweep over Adams State with two more wins on Saturday by 6-3 and 6-1 finals. The Bulldogs have now won six straight games and are 7-2 on the season – the best start since 2020's season cut short due to COVID.
The Bulldogs host Newman on Tuesday in a midweek contest before preparing for the start of GAC play against Henderson State next weekend, which will also come at home.
Game One – SWOSU 6, ASU 3 (7 inn.)
Four runs in the first inning, all with two outs, helped lift SWOSU to a win in the third game of the series.
After ASU's pitcher collected two outs on three pitches to start the game, the Dawgs had seven straight batters reach base safely to jump out to a lead. Two hits, mixed in with four walks and another hit by pitch, allowed the inning to sway in favor of SWOSU.
Connor Jeffers added a run in the third with an inside the park home run to center field. He finished 2-2 on the day with two RBIs and a walk.
SWOSU's sixth run came in the fifth inning on a two-out RBI single from
Sean Monsour.
Josh Fluet (W, 1-0) threw 5.0 innings to earn the win. He struck out three, walked one, and scattered two hits. Adams State scored three unearned runs in the fourth inning as their only run production.
Ernesto Hidrogo picked up the save after pitching the sixth and seventh without giving up a hit.
Game Two – SWOSU 6, ASU 1
The finale was a pitching duel. Starter
Zane Leonard threw 7.0 innings of scoreless baseball while striking out five and allowing three hits. On the other side, was ASU's starter who made it through five innings without a run until the Dawgs finally broke through in the sixth.
Ty Eastwood drove in two runs with a single to left to put the game's first runs on the board. SWOSU added another an inning later thanks to a
Jackson Syring RBI double and finished the scoring off with three two-out runs in the eighth on two costly errors from Adams State.
Grant Ewy through a scoreless eighth in relief and Eastwood collected the final three outs in the ninth. The Grizzlies did avoid the shutout with a run in the final frame – a leadoff walk cashed into a run by an RBI single.
Connor Jeffers led the offense with a 2-3 showing in game two including a double. The offense finished with eight hits compared to five from the visitors.
