WEATHERFORD – SWOSU Baseball scored in every inning and allowed just one unearned run in a 14-1 run-rule victory over Newman on Tuesday, pushing their win streak to seven.
The win makes SWOSU 8-2 on the season heading into the start of conference play this weekend. It's the best start to a season in the Zack Saunders era and SWOSU's best start since they began 10-0 back in 2004.
Against Newman, SWOSU got on the board in the first inning with a solo home run from Geoff Marlow – his fourth of the year.
An inning later, a Marco Barrera single to right field with two runners on turned into a foot race after the fielder allowed the ball to go under his glove and all the way to the ball. The error was costly, allowing both runners on base to score plus Barrera. Two more errors in the inning allowed another run to cross.
Sean Monsour singled in a run in the third, followed by a solo home run by Reece Burke and a Ty Eastwood RBI single in the fourth.
Three more runs came in the fifth in unique fashion. Burke hit another over the fence with the bases loaded but did not step on home plate after rounding third during his home run trot. He was awarded a triple and three RBI but did not finish with a multi home run day despite sending two baseballs out of the yard.
Walks in the sixth inning allowed three more runs to cross. Marlow, who started the day's scoring, capped the day off with a two out, two-RBI single.
Similar to last week's midweek, SWOSU pitchers pieced together the game by throwing an inning apiece. Seven pitchers made appearances, with no earned runs surrendered between the group. Newman scored one run in the fourth inning which featured two fielding errors by the otherwise solid Bulldog defense.
SWOSU's 13-game homestand to start the season concludes this weekend with the start of conference play. The Bulldogs will host Henderson State Friday and Saturday for a three-game GAC series. Game one starts at 2:00 pm Friday with the doubleheader set to begin Saturday at noon.
