WEATHERFORD – SWOSU baseball opened the Great American Conference schedule on Friday afternoon with a single game against Henderson State. After scoring four runs in the first inning, SWOSU managed just one more run and fell 9-5. The loss snaps a seven-game winning streak.
The wind in Weatherford played a huge factor in the first conference game of the year. Seven errors were committed between the two teams and 11 of the 14 hits in the game were singles. The Dawgs flew out multiple times after solid contact due to the 30 mph gusts.
The Bulldogs started hot thanks to miscues from Reddie pitching. Four runs came through in the first inning off of two walks, two hit batters, and an error from the defense. The Reddies tightened up after that, cooling down SWOSU nearly the rest of the way.
The Dawg offense was blanked for the next seven innings, but still had a chance in the bottom of the ninth.
Sean Monsour knocked a leadoff single and
Jackson Syring's double had two runners in scoring position. A full count, two out walk loaded the bases and led to a
Ty Eastwood RBI single to slim the lead by one run. A fly out in the next bat by ended the game with the tying run at the plate.
Henderson State took time to get their bats going, but found their success through the middle innings. Three runs in the fifth, one in the sixth, and three more in the seventh gave them their five-run advantage.
SWOSU left 11 runners on base, including the second inning and ninth inning that ended with all bases occupied. Their four errors led to four HSU runs, which proved to be the difference.
The Bulldogs have two more chances at the Reddies tomorrow. They host them for a doubleheader beginning at 12:00 pm.
